Lux Noctis by Reuben Wu; Light Paths by Drones Above Natural Landscapes

Influenced by ideas of planetary exploration, 19th-century sublime romantic painting and sci-fi, photographer Reuben Wu‘s current series Lux Noctis depicts remote natural landscapes seemingly unbound by time and space. Wu continues to explore breathtaking natural and manmade forms throughout his works and appears to be heavily influenced by surrealism. Check out the full photo series here.
“We are overwhelmed everyday by beautiful images of the familiar. I imagine these scenes transformed into undiscovered landscapes which renew our perceptions of our world,” Wu says of his work.
For Lux Noctis, the Chicago-based photographer flies modified drones above mostly untouched landscapes, using them as aerial spotlights to cast light paths above the obscure terrain. The mountainous topography remains distant and unreached, yet illuminated in a surrealist way. “I see it as a kind of ‘zero trace’ version of land art where the environment remains untouched by the artist, and at the same time is presented in a sublime way which speaks to 19th century Romantic painting and science and fictional imagery,” said Wu.
