Avoirdupois Furniture Design – Fascinating Reinterpretations of Architectural Classics

“We recently came across the work of new-on-the-scene designer, New York-based James Stumpf, working under the studio name of ‘Avoirdupois’ who is about to release his debut collection ‘Tripartite’. The name for me, living in France, automatically indicated a French connection, where in fact it translates in English engineering terms – to a system of weights for measuring. James, originally an engineer by profession, was drawn to the familiar term which felt like the perfect fit to be the name for his new design studio. He wanted to make a statement and create something of significance and weight on the furniture scene.
When asked what inspired him and where he wanted to bring his new studio in the future, with a methodical mind, he talked about reinventing a new generation of iconic and classic pieces with beauty in luxurious and unexpected material combinations, good proportions and details in the engineering functionality of their inner workings.”
Avoirdupois debuted Collection Nº1 / Tripartite in 2019 with a solo show at 17 White Street in Tribeca. Consisting of 22 pieces, Tripartite as a collection is the visual division of three. Every piece shares commonality with a single triplicating motif running through the entire collection in discernible and ambiguous ways. Aluminum and silver tones were prominently featured. The motif was explored in a multitude of materials including veneers, lacquers, hardwoods, metals, plastics, bentwood, plywood, porcelain, upholstery and natural caning. All pieces are numbered to represent their inclusion in Collection Nº1, said numbers are all divisible by three.
All facets of Collection Nº1 / Tripartite were singularly designed, engineered, built and finished in his SoHo workshop over a 2-½ year period.
