Sala Equis Theater: A XXX Renovation

This former adult theater transforms into a gorgeous art nouveau movie theater! The interior design studio Plantea has transformed a former adult-film cinema in Madrid, creating a contemporary art-nouveau theatre within its once racy, X-rated shell. Its dark and concealing walls have been replaced with an air of vintage elegance. Rich velvet fabrics, bright LED lights, and soft pink tones are layered together, creating a series of spaces that are welcoming to any movie lover.

To start, the newly renamed Sala Equis comes with a lot of history.
The former Duque de Alba cinema first opened its doors in 1941. Adult films played for nearly three decades until it transformed into a modern restaurant, design shop, and art gallery. The 700 square metre venue is built around a multi-levelled plaza that blurs the boundary between the interior and exterior. A large skylight invites bright light into the space. Additionally, plants designed in part with landscaping studio Rentagarden makes way for the abundance of light. Folding beach chairs add simplified and flexible seating, and intricate wall details and exposed marks of age remind one of the rich history while remaining contemporary.

The heart of the project is the refurbished cinema that now stands as an intimate space able to hold 64 people. Upon entering, vibrant ruby red walls, seats, ceilings greet the guest. Cozy, bright velvet covers all surfaces. Also, scalloped-edged benches redefine the theater’s seating with a shared viewing experience.
Alternatively, the muted colors of the cocktail bar contrast the theater beautifully. Dusty pink shades create a gallery reminiscent of a golden age hollywood set. Pink and blue tones fade between each other in gorgeous tiles, and curving wooden benchtops invite in a natural warmth. Designers state that their goal was to create the feel of a classic night club, and it certainly accomplishes that goal.

Not only did designers remake a dark and dingy adult theater into a vibrant and welcoming art space, but they also found a retro uniqueness in their vintage, americana feel.
